Annual Gas Heater Maintenance

Maintaining your gas heater

To prolong the life of your gas heater and ensure it is operating at its optimum, it is important to maintain and clean it regularly and after a prolonged period of time, to have it serviced.

All Gas heaters come with maintenance guidelines. Heaters that have blockages or have dirty filters may not work properly or efficiently. A gas heater that does not work efficiently may use more energy and cost you more, to run. Always check the website or the owner’s manual that comes with the appliance for information on how to maintain your gas heater.

There are gas heaters that can produce dangerous gas emissions and Carbon monoxide.

People exposed to CO Gas could get symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning such as headaches, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain, confusion etc

It is always advisable to have good ventilation when using a gas heater – especially when the heater does not come installed with a vent or flue.

Vented or flued gas heaters are usually installed in bedrooms or bathrooms to ensure that the combusted air is expelled out. This is why a ventless or flueless gas heater CANNOT be installed in bedrooms or bathrooms. Heaters that do not have a flue or a vent may be installed in larger living areas or open plan areas, but you should still ensure there is adequate ventilation to circulate the air and to bring in fresh air.

Check the website for your gas heating appliance for instructions on how to maintain and clean your gas heater yourself. Bromic is available here, Eskabe maintenance and cleaning info is here and Paloma care manuals are here.

Contact HSG Distributors should you need the name of a qualified service centre near you for further assistance.

Getting Connected to Natural Gas

Natural Gas from Egoli Gas

Why make the switch to Natural Gas?

There are many reasons to switch to Natural Gas, if it is available in your area:

Save Energy and Money – Natural gas is more efficient than many other energy sources. Depending on the appliances you choose and how you use your gas, you may reduce your monthly power costs by up to 50%. Certain gas appliances have no pre-heating requirement – it’s instantaneous and cost saving.

Reliable Supply – Egoli Natural Gas is piped directly to your home or business 24/7. They offer reliable energy even when your neighbourhood has power black-outs. Gas is an environmentally friendly, natural energy on tap – all the time. The flow of gas is constant and doesn’t “run out”.

When it’s off, it’s off – Unlike electricity, when you turn your gas valve off, it really is off – which means it’s safe and you save money.

Environmentally friendly – Natural Gas reduces the greenhouse effect, which is a main cause of global warming. It is the cleanest burning fossil fuel releasing 45% less carbon dioxide into the air.

Safe – Natural Gas is colourless, soot-less and sulphur free. Strict adherence to pipeline inspections and safety checks ensure the safe, consistent flow of natural gas. It is lighter than air and disperses upward when leaked.

Why would I use gas?

Gas can be used for heating, cooling, drying or lighting your home because it performs more effectively, efficiently and economically, than many other energy sources.  As Natural gas has lower carbon emissions, it is more environmentally friendly.

Where can I use gas?

You can use Natural Gas for your fireplace, oven hob or stove, lights, to heat your hot water, braai grill, to heat your home, drying and air conditioning.

Paloma Annual Charity Walk for CHOC

For the 4th year in a row Paloma / HSG Distributors were one of the proud sponsors of the CHOC fundraising walk up and down, Sani Pass. A gruelling up and slippery down walk from the South African border to the Lesotho border in the Lesotho Maloti Mountains. However, your reward is the beautiful scenery and a drink at The Highest Pub in Africa in Lesotho!

It’s only 8km each way but a hefty 905m elevation up to 2873m above sea-level! The walk takes place each year on the August Women’s Day Weekend.

This year, the weather was warm and sunny albeit quite windy. The Paloma Team set off at about 9am and took a brisk 2.5 hours to reach the top. At The Highest Pub in Africa a well deserved plate of chips was devoured, ready to tackle the walk back down. With the weather being so mild this August, there was absolutely no snow to see – a stark contrast to 2018 when cars had been snowed in for 3 days!

The downward trek was a bit slippery and after a few slides we made is safely down to the bottom for the donated Sani Round Tables refreshments.

The Founding of CHOC

CHOC was founded by Sadie Cutland and a  group of parents. When her daughter was diagnosed with a life threatening disease in 1977 she felt alone and isolated, with no support from anyone but her husband. But in 1979 she began parenting support groups to help families in similar situations, discuss their challenges and create a supportive community.  She also helped create a more child-friendly, less clinical ward at the haematology and oncology ward.

The name CHOC came about when support group members looked at the sign outside ward 294 at the Joburg Gen (now the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital) where Sadie worked as a night nurse. While there, she heard many stories of parents who were initially unable to stay overnight with their children nor find accommodation near the hospitals, while their children underwent treatment.

Can you imagine? Your child is staying in a strange hospital and you couldn’t even be close by when they needed you most? In 2000, the CHOC Foundation went national and have since opened 10 houses, 2 CHOC Lodges and a CHOC Cottage, where guardians and their children can be accommodated while children undergo treatment at nearby hospitals for as long as its required. Beyond this CHOC provides transport funds for children to return for treatment; grocery packs and vouchers for families in need; psycho social counselling and bereavement support.

The Annual CHOC walk takes place every Women’s Day weekend and if you’d like to say you ‘Walked Sani Pass’ and raise funds for CHOC in future years, please contact Agie Govender of CHOC KZN – dbn@choc.org.za  0312402917. Alternatively, you can look up www.choc.org.za to see if you can help in any other way.

Thinking of getting a Paloma Remote Controller?

Why do I need Paloma Remote Controller?

It just makes sense!

A Temperature Controller helps save you even more money, water and energy!

Your Paloma Gas Geyser is pre-set to a maximum temperature and this is the temperature your water will always reach. Should it stay at the factory setting of 60’C, you will always need to use additional cold water to ‘cool it down’. However the remote controller allows you to change the maximum temperature and in addition, the bath fill function allows you to have an additional maximum temperature, that maybe used in certain circumstances – like running a bath for kids or restricting shower times.

How does Paloma’s remote controller save energy?

You can set the ‘bath fill’ temperature to an ambient temperature. When set at the ambient temperature the water is quickly heated up to that temperature and no time is wasted trying to adjust the hot and cold taps to reach the desired warmth.  The water is no ‘over-heated’ and then cooled again with the cold water.

How does Paloma’s remote controller save water?

By using the ‘bath fill’ function you can set how many litres a person should use when they shower or bath. Once this amount of water has been used, the deluxe controller will shut off the water supply, while the standard controller will beep to inform you – no more wasteful showers or large baths!

As the ambient water temperature is set by the controller – absolutely NO COLD water is required as the temperature is exactly right every time.

Should you use your bath fill function for showering or bathing, you can leave the everyday temperature slightly higher to be used in the kitchen, when warmer water is normally required. When this water is used it is usually in much smaller quantities so only a small amount of water and gas will be used!

Paloma Deluxe Controller Closed

A Paloma Temperature Controller can only be used by a Paloma Gas Geyser – either 1 per geyser or 1 per 2 of the same geysers joined by EZ-Link (Two x 27l only.)

There are 3 types of controllers in South Africa. These units can be bought to retrofit directly from our website or when purchasing your Paloma Geyser – make sure you ask your installer for one!
